WORKING TOGETHER FOR BETTER USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY
Excess renewable electricity is converted into renewable gas in Iceland, and part of it is imported into Switzerland. The concept of the Nordur Initiative represents a win-win situation. Working together allows the two EFTA countries to make better use of renewable energy and reduce global carbon emissions.
POWER-TO-GAS
RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY STORAGE
Power-to-gas is an innovative technology enabling the storage of excess renewable electricity. In a system that relies entirely on renewable energy, power-to-gas makes an important contribution to seasonal storage. In Iceland, the conditions for power-to-gas are particularly favourable.
FIRST POWER-TO-GAS PLANT IN ICELAND
PILOT PROJECT HELLISHEIDI
The first power-to-gas plant in Iceland is to be built on the site of the Hellisheidi geothermal power plant. Further plants will follow at various locations in Iceland and, at a later time, in Norway.
